Define paraphrase. Discuss how to paraphrase effectively. Go over these tips from Writer's Web.
Give students copies of a newspaper article (this can be the same article used for the plagiarism activity). Read the article aloud and ask students to take notes (key words only). Tell students to turn put the article away and write a paraphrase of the first idea in the article using their notes only. Then give the following directions to your students.
Reread the first section of the article. Is your sentence almost the same as the article?

That is copying?Did you forget to give credit to the writer?

Next, give them another article and ask them to begin a paragraph with a quotation.
